Exploring Shoryuji Castle in Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Complete Loot Guide
I still remember the first time I spotted Shoryuji Castle from a wind-swept viewpoint south of Kyoto. The white walls caught the late afternoon light, and even from a distance I could see guards pacing along the upper walkways. In Assassin's Creed Shadows, this compact fortification might look like a minor detour, but it hides some seriously worthwhile rewards for anyone willing to climb its towers and eliminate its defenders.

Like every castle in the game, Shoryuji Castle follows a familiar loop: defeat the samurai daisho stationed around the grounds, unlock the Legendary Chest, and claim a piece of Legendary gear. It is optional, but skipping it means passing up one of Naoe's best stealth-focused armor pieces. I went in expecting a quick raid and ended up combing the entire compound for hidden treasure. Here is everything I found worth carrying out.
Where to Find Shoryuji Castle
Shoryuji Castle sits in the Shoryuji region, which places it north of Yamazaki, south of central Kyoto, and east of Ogura Pond. If you have already synchronized with a viewpoint near Yamazaki or southern Kyoto, you can probably spot the castle from there, mark it on your map, and travel toward it. Once you arrive, make sure to climb the main tower and synchronize with the viewpoint at the top. That unlocks a fast travel point for Shoryuji Castle, which saves a lot of time if you want to return later.

The castle itself is relatively small compared to some of the sprawling fortresses elsewhere in the game. That makes it easier to navigate quickly, but it also means more enemies are packed into tighter spaces. I found that starting from the outer wall and working inward gave me the best sense of control.
The Three Samurai Daisho
Clearing Shoryuji Castle requires defeating three samurai daisho. Their positions can shift slightly depending on season, difficulty, alerts, and their own patrol routes, so use my descriptions as a general guide rather than an exact script.
⚔️ First Samurai Daisho — I located the first daisho patrolling the southeast part of the castle grounds. He was in a fairly open area surrounded by several other enemies. Because he rarely stood alone, I had better luck tailing him from cover until his patrol isolated him. If you are playing as Yasuke, you can also simply power through the group and finish him directly.

⚔️ Second Samurai Daisho — The second daisho hangs around the center-south area of Shoryuji Castle. He tends to linger near thick foliage, which was a gift when I visited during a warmer season. There were plenty of bushes and tall grasses to hide in while I waited for a clean assassination window.
⚔️ Third Samurai Daisho — The final daisho patrols near a northeastern building. He walks along the wooden boards surrounding that structure, which makes him vulnerable to a well-timed aerial assassination. I watched his route for a minute or two, then dropped from above when he passed beneath an overhang.
One detail worth noting: there is a Kano painting inside a fortified building on the castle grounds. Depending on your game state, either the second or third daisho may patrol nearby. I recommend clearing both before you start looting so you do not get interrupted while carrying valuable items.
Unlocking the Legendary Chest
After the three daisho are eliminated, head to the tenshu, or main tower. The Legendary Chest is located on the highest floor, but reaching it is not always obvious. I first tried climbing the exterior walls floor by floor, which worked but took longer than necessary. The easier method is to fast travel to the viewpoint at the top of the tower, then use the trapdoor in the roof to drop inside.
From the attic, climb down the ladder and the chest will be right there, usually unguarded. Inside I found the Yurei-Walker Robes, a Legendary armor piece for Naoe. These robes carry the Silent Footsteps engraving. That perk reduces how effectively nearby enemies can detect your sound, meaning you can move faster while staying unseen. For a stealth-focused playstyle, it is one of the most useful early armor effects I have come across.
Kura Key, Kano Painting, and Extra Treasure
Before poking around locked doors, grab the kura key. I found it on an enemy inside one of the buildings, and it literally opens doors around the castle. Without it, several storerooms remain inaccessible, so I made sure to loot that enemy before moving on.
The Kano painting is another high-value pickup. It may be inside a building that one of the daisho was guarding, and it can be sold for a significant amount of mon. I tend to hold onto such items until I need funds, but either way, it is worth grabbing.
Here are the other notable treasures I discovered around the grounds:
-
🏴☠️ Foul Kusarigama of Malice — inside a small building in the southeastern corner of the castle grounds
-
🎭 Pirate's Mask — just southeast of the main tower
-
🏴☠️ Pirate's Gear — near the south castle wall
-
👻 Ghost-Walker Hood — in a storage shed near the Kano painting
Inside the main tower itself, I also found:
| Item | Type |
|---|---|
| Brutal Teppo of Wounding | Weapon |
| Heavy Lantern | Outdoor cosmetic |
Beyond those, keep an eye out for scattered materials and mon. They are not unique enough to go far out of your way, but if you see them while moving between objectives, they are free resources.
Final Thoughts
Shoryuji Castle may be small, but it rewards a patient approach. The Yurei-Walker Robes alone justify the trip, especially if you prefer silent movement over direct combat. Add the Kano painting, the various pirate-themed cosmetics, and the easy fast travel viewpoint, and this becomes a very efficient stop on your journey through Assassin's Creed Shadows. I cleared it once with Naoe for the stealth benefits, then returned later with Yasuke just to enjoy the view from the top of the tenshu.
As reported by Game Developer, strong level design often hinges on readable goal loops—clear targets, meaningful rewards, and short backtracking—an approach that fits Shoryuji Castle’s compact “defeat the daisho, unlock the Legendary Chest” structure. Framed through that lens, the castle’s tight enemy density, key-gated storerooms, and a fast-travel-enabled rooftop entry point become deliberate pacing tools that push players to alternate between stealth scouting and decisive takedowns while keeping the reward cadence (like Naoe’s stealth-oriented gear) feeling earned rather than incidental.
